Canon defines it as a full ink absorber: the internal system that catches ink discharged during print-head cleaning has reached its service limit. The printer may stop printing to prevent uncontrolled waste ink. Before downloading a reset utility, identify the exact model and determine whether it has a user-replaceable maintenance cartridge or an internal absorber that Canon treats as a repair item.
What 5B00 actually means
An inkjet printer uses ink for more than the page. During automatic cleaning, deep cleaning, priming, and nozzle maintenance, it pumps a small amount of ink away from the print head. That waste ink is captured below the printing mechanism. The printer estimates how much the absorber has collected and eventually displays a warning or a stop code.
Canon’s TS3700 documentation states that 5B00 means the ink absorber is full, that printing cannot continue, and that the absorber should be replaced. This makes 5B00 different from Canon B200, which is associated with the print-head system, and different from Canon 5100, which points first to obstructed carriage movement or improperly seated tanks.

Find the exact model before choosing a repair
Read the model label from the front, rear, or underside of the printer and include every letter and number. PIXMA, MAXIFY, MegaTank, and imagePROGRAF families do not share one absorber design. Search Canon’s manual by the exact model, then open the support-code page. Do not assume a video for a similar-looking printer uses the same service sequence.
Some newer Canon printers have a maintenance cartridge that the owner can replace from an access cover. Canon publishes a cartridge number and a numbered replacement procedure when this is intended. Other printers use internal pads and require disassembly, cleaning or replacement, leak inspection, and a service-counter procedure. A visible panel does not prove the part is user-serviceable.
Separate the physical absorber from its counter
The physical absorber stores liquid ink. The counter is the printer’s estimate of the absorber’s use. Both matter, but they are not interchangeable. Resetting a counter can make a message disappear; it cannot dry, clean, or replace saturated material. If the printer resumes cleaning and printing while the pads remain full, ink can spread inside the base or leak onto furniture.
This is why a blind service-mode reset is a poor first step. Unofficial utilities may target the wrong firmware, require disabling security controls, or include unwanted software. They can also erase the evidence a technician needs without correcting the cause. What you can safely check at home
- Photograph the display or count the exact lamp pattern before switching off.
- Confirm the complete model number and region from the product label.
- Open Canon’s manual and verify that the code shown is 5B00 for that model.
- Check whether the manual names a replaceable maintenance cartridge and part number.
- Stop print-head cleaning and deep-cleaning cycles, because they send more ink to the absorber.
- If no user replacement is documented, request a service estimate and compare it with replacement cost.
You may also check for visible ink underneath the printer without tipping it. Place absorbent material around, not inside, the base if leakage is suspected. Disconnect power if liquid reaches the desk or cables. Do not reach under the carriage, remove base screws, wash pads in a household sink, or touch internal electronics.
When a maintenance cartridge can be user-replaced
A supported maintenance cartridge is a defined consumable, not a generic sponge. Canon’s GX2000 guide, for example, specifies cartridge MC-G05 and gives handling instructions: avoid touching the terminal, keep the removed cartridge level, and seal it in the supplied bag. Those instructions apply to that series, not automatically to every PIXMA printer.
If your model manual provides an equivalent page, obtain the exact cartridge number from Canon or an authorized seller and follow the sequence on screen. Do not turn off the printer during a documented replacement if the manual says to leave it on. If the model only displays 5B00 and directs you to repair, treat the absorber as internal.
How to judge whether service is economical
Ask for a written estimate that states whether the shop will replace or properly service the absorber, inspect for ink contamination, and reset the service value only after the physical work. Include the printer age, nozzle condition, scanner operation, duplex mechanism, and ink system in the decision. A nearly new photo printer may justify service; a basic unit with a failing print head may not.
Before handing over a multifunction printer, remove originals from the scanner, cancel queued documents, and note any Wi-Fi credentials or address-book data stored by the model. Print or photograph a nozzle-check pattern only if the machine still allows it without extra cleaning. If the shop proposes only a software reset, ask how the saturated ink will be handled.
Transport the printer without spreading waste ink
Canon warns owners not to tilt some printers when an absorber warning is present because ink may leak. Turn the printer off using its power button when possible, disconnect cables after shutdown, close covers, and keep the unit upright. Do not place it on its side in a car. Use a plastic liner under the printer while keeping ventilation and handling safe, and tell the service center about any visible leak.
Verify the repair before accepting the printer
- The 5B00 message is gone after a normal cold start, not only during a technician’s service mode.
- No ink appears under the base during a short print and cleaning cycle.
- A nozzle check prints without new carriage, paper, or print-head errors.
- The service invoice identifies the absorber or maintenance cartridge work performed.
- The printer remains level and clean after transport home.
