A Samsung washer 5C or 5E code means the machine did not drain as expected; it does not prove the pump motor is dead. A kinked hose, blocked standpipe, trapped coin, packed pump filter, frozen line, or incorrect installation can produce the same code. Deal with the standing water safely, then test each part of the drain path.
Protect the floor before opening anything
A drum that looks only partly full can release several litres through the emergency hose or filter. Keep children away, unplug power, and do not open the main door while water is above its lower edge. Use a low container, towels, and gloves.
If the water is hot from a sanitise or high-temperature cycle, wait for it to cool. Do not tip the washer forward or remove a lower panel unless the user manual specifically instructs it. A built-in or stacked installation may need a technician.

Inspect the rear hose without changing its routing blindly
Pull the washer forward only if the hoses and power cord have enough slack and the floor is stable. Look for a sharp bend, crushing, ice, or an extension that restricts flow. The hose must not be sealed airtight too deeply into the standpipe.
Samsung’s current guidance gives installation heights that vary by washer family and region. Follow the manual for the exact model rather than copying one number. A hose that is too low can siphon; one that is too high can exceed the pump’s lift.
Use the emergency drain before removing the filter
On many front-load Samsung washers, a small lower-front access door contains an emergency drain tube and pump filter. Confirm your model has this arrangement. Put the tube over a shallow tray, remove its cap, drain in batches, then recap it securely.
If no water comes through a drum that clearly contains water, the emergency tube itself may be blocked. Do not force wire through it. Stop and arrange service, because opening the filter can release the full drum onto the floor.
Clean and reseat the pump filter
- After emergency draining, turn the filter counter-clockwise slowly.
- Catch the remaining water with towels and a tray.
- Remove lint, coins, hairpins, buttons, and other debris.

Separate the washer from the household drain
If the filter and hose are clear but water backs up at the sink or standpipe, the household drain may be blocked. A washer pump cannot overcome a closed drain. Stop testing before overflow and contact a plumber if other fixtures also drain slowly.
Where safe and permitted by the manual, a technician may test the outlet hose into a suitable basin to isolate the standpipe. Do not improvise this with an unsecured hose; pump discharge can move the hose and flood the room.
Run one empty verification cycle
Reconnect power and water, then run Rinse + Spin or the manual’s recommended drain test with an empty drum. Watch the hose, filter cover, and floor. Record whether the pump starts, how quickly water leaves, and whether 5C/5E returns.
If it drains until you reconnect the household outlet, the plumbing or installation is implicated. If it fails with a clear filter and correctly routed hose, the pump, internal hose, wiring, pressure sensing, or control may need service.
Cold weather and frozen drain lines
A washer kept in an unheated area can show a drain error when water freezes in the hose or pump. Do not use boiling water, flame, or a heat gun. Move the appliance environment back into its allowed temperature range and follow Samsung’s thawing guidance.
Inspect for cracks after thawing. Ice expansion can damage hoses and seals. If water appears under the machine, keep it unplugged and close the taps.
Do not confuse 5E with SE
On segmented displays, 5E can resemble SE. Use the model manual and the exact stage of the cycle. Also distinguish washer codes from Samsung dishwasher codes; the same characters can mean different things on another appliance.

When pump replacement is a justified suspicion
- The filter and external hose are clear and correctly installed.
- The household drain accepts water normally.
- An empty drain test still produces 5C/5E.
- The pump is silent, unusually loud, leaking, or electrically trips the supply.
- Debris damaged the visible impeller or the code returns immediately.
These signs justify diagnosis, not blind parts ordering. A technician should verify supply voltage, pump resistance, internal hoses and control commands for the exact model.
