A perfect Apple TV picture with no sound is useful evidence: video made it through HDMI, but the audio path, output choice, or format may not. Start by finding where sound disappears instead of resetting every device in the room.
Quick diagnosis
Unmute the TV, soundbar, and receiver; reseat both HDMI ends; then connect Apple TV directly to the TV. If sound returns, the receiver, switch, ARC/eARC path, or its format support is the boundary. If direct sound is still absent, set Audio Output to Apple TV and test a simpler format before changing hardware.
Is all sound missing, or only one kind?
| What you can hear | What it narrows down | First check |
|---|---|---|
| No menu clicks and no apps | Output, HDMI path, mute, or global format | Enable Sound Effects and Music; inspect output |
| Menu clicks but one app is silent | App, track, or content format | Try another title and app |
| TV speakers work, receiver does not | Receiver input or supported format | Keep direct TV test and inspect receiver |
| Stereo works, Atmos does not | Format or ARC/eARC capability | Verify the complete equipment chain |
| HomePod works, TV is silent | Default Audio Output selection | Set the intended destination explicitly |
Direct-to-TV is the decisive test
Disconnect the HDMI switch, soundbar passthrough, or AV receiver and run a known-good HDMI cable from Apple TV straight to the TV. Select that TV input and test menu clicks plus two different apps. This single change separates Apple TV and the television from every intermediate device.
If audio returns, do not replace Apple TV. Rebuild the chain one device at a time, confirming receiver input, soundbar HDMI input/output direction, TV ARC/eARC port, and HDMI-CEC settings. A picture can pass through equipment that cannot decode the selected audio format.
Check the output before the format
- Open Settings > Video and Audio.
- Set Audio Output to Apple TV when using TV speakers, a soundbar, or an AV receiver for this test.
- Turn on Sound Effects and Music if navigation is silent.
- Play a title with ordinary stereo audio.
- Only then open Audio Format and test a compatible alternative.
Auto is the normal default because Apple TV selects the best format supported by the reported equipment. “Change Format” is a diagnostic fallback, not an automatic quality upgrade.
Use format changes as controlled tests
| Setting or test | What a successful result means | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Stereo works | The basic HDMI audio path is alive | Check multichannel support in TV/receiver |
| Dolby Digital 5.1 works | Receiver accepts compressed 5.1 | Document this working format |
| 16-bit Audio Mode works | TV may require that compatibility mode | Keep it only if needed |
| Turning off Continuous Audio works | Older receiver may dislike continuous Dolby MAT | Review receiver capabilities |
| No format works directly | Not just an Atmos mismatch | Test HDMI cable, TV port, update, and support |
Restart the whole handshake in order
Power down the TV and receiver, unplug Apple TV, then reconnect HDMI firmly. Power the TV and audio equipment, select the correct inputs, and reconnect Apple TV power. This rebuilds the HDMI handshake. Avoid changing five settings during the restart; otherwise you will not know which change mattered.
ARC, eARC, and HomePod are separate paths
ARC/eARC sends TV audio back through a designated HDMI port, while a direct Apple TV-to-receiver connection sends audio forward through the receiver. HomePod default output uses the network and Apple account setup as well. Name your exact path on paper before troubleshooting: Apple TV → TV speakers, Apple TV → receiver → TV, or Apple TV → TV → eARC soundbar.
When only one app is silent
Play another title in the same app and then a different app. Check the selected audio track and language. Force-closing or reinstalling one app is proportionate only when menu sounds and other apps work. A factory reset of Apple TV is not an appropriate first response to one silent stream.

Frequently asked questions
Why is there video but no audio?
HDMI carries both, but audio can be routed to another output or encoded in a format the next device cannot decode.
Should Audio Format stay on Auto?
Usually yes. Test Stereo, Dolby Digital 5.1, or 16-bit only to identify a compatibility boundary.
When should I contact support?
When multiple known-good cables and TV ports fail in a direct connection after updates and restarts, or the HDMI port is loose or damaged.
If audio plays but only the Apple TV Remote volume buttons fail, use the Arabic IR versus HDMI-CEC decision test.
