Your iPhone 17 already tells you why charging feels slow. Before buying a 40-watt adapter, open Settings > Battery and read the charging card: a configured limit, an optimized schedule, a temperature hold, and “Slow Charger” are four different states.
The two-minute decision
Record the battery percentage and the exact Battery message. Connect the iPhone directly to a wall outlet with a reliable USB-C Power Delivery adapter and cable, lock the screen, and check it again after 20 minutes. Test between roughly 20% and 60% so the intentionally slower final stage does not distort the result.
Let the Battery card choose the test

1. Start with the charge limit, not the cable drawer
On iPhone 15 and later, Settings > Battery > Charging can set a maximum from 80% to 100%. When the iPhone stops at the same selected percentage and the card names that limit, the behavior is intentional. You can allow a full charge until tomorrow or set the limit to 100%; replacing a cable cannot override the setting.
The phone may occasionally charge to 100% even with a lower limit so its battery estimate stays accurate. That one full charge is not proof that the feature has failed. If the phone does not charge at all, use the separate USB-C message, cable, and port route.
2. Separate optimized charging from a frozen percentage
Optimized charging learns when you usually disconnect and can postpone the last part. Look for a completion time or charging schedule. If you need a full battery earlier, use the one-time Charge Now option instead of disabling battery protection permanently.
If there is no schedule and the percentage is static, run the 20-minute controlled test. Write down the starting percentage, estimated time to 80%, message, and room temperature. Lock the display and avoid camera, navigation, gaming, and video. Those tasks create heat and can consume much of the power entering the phone.
3. Read “Slow Charger” literally
Apple says the message does not mean the iPhone or charger is broken. It means a higher-power source could improve the experience. A wired source at 7.5W or less, a wireless source below 10W, a car port, a computer port, or a shared USB hub can be slower than a dedicated USB-C PD wall adapter.
If the adapter has two ports, disconnect the second device during the comparison; its power may be shared. Keep the same cable for the first test, then change only the cable. A result is useful when one variable changes at a time. Do not compare a cool, locked phone on a wall outlet with a warm phone running navigation in a car.
4. Wireless charging has its own bottlenecks
Center the iPhone on a MagSafe or Qi2-certified pad, remove metal objects, and test without a thick or misaligned case. Apple notes that a wired USB-C or Lightning accessory connected while the phone charges wirelessly can limit wireless charging to 7.5W. Disconnect pass-through adapters and headphones during the test.
If wired charging gains normally but wireless charging does not, the evidence points toward alignment, case, pad, or its power source. If both methods pause with a temperature message, follow the thermal path instead of buying two chargers. Compare with normal warmth versus a thermal limit.
5. What happens after 80%?
Charging naturally tapers after about 80% to reduce heat and battery stress. A fast 30-to-80% session followed by a slower final 20% is not the same as a phone that barely gains charge below 60%. Use the new iOS 26 estimate in Settings > Battery to compare like with like.
When iOS reports a temperature hold, unplug the phone, stop the demanding app, move it out of direct sun, and let it normalize gradually. Never use a refrigerator, ice, or compressed cold air. If temperature holds repeat in a moderate room with the screen locked, document them and seek service.
6. Inspect the port without damaging it
Disconnect power and use a light. Do not insert metal, liquid, or compressed air into the USB-C port. If iOS reports liquid, follow the safe liquid-detected drying route and do not use an emergency override casually. A loose connection, discolored plug, or cable that becomes painfully hot is a stop sign.
7. When a battery or service check is justified
- The iPhone gains little charge below 60% with a known-good direct wall setup and screen locked.
- Every reliable source shows Incompatible Charger after the port is dry and clear.
- The phone restarts, the screen lifts, or the battery is swollen.
- A temperature hold returns in a moderate room without heavy use.
- Battery drain is consuming the incoming power; compare the graph with the iOS 26 battery-drain test.
